Whether they were choking rebels with the Force or bullying nerds in a high school hallway, these 30 characters made the decade's movies unforgettable for all the wrong reasons.
1. Darth Vader, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
There's no more menacing yet oddly cool representation of evil in cinema than Darth Vader, played by David Prowse and voiced by James Earl Jones. He'd already appeared in 1977's A New Hope, but it was the 1980 sequel that delivered his defining moment, informing Luke Skywalker of a paternity reveal that remains one of the most quoted twists in film history.
2. General Zod, Superman II
After Superman accidentally released General Zod and two fellow criminals from the Phantom Zone, Terence Stamp's ruthless, revenge fueled villain set his sights on world domination. Ordinary humans stand no chance against his powers, leaving a conflicted Superman as the only thing standing between Zod and total conquest.
3. Roy Batty, Blade Runner
The late Rutger Hauer delivered a stellar performance as the ringleader of the Nexus-6 replicants, a character fans often feel genuinely conflicted about liking or disliking. What's beyond debate is that Batty combined superhuman strength with sharp intellect to become one of the toughest antagonists science fiction ever produced.
4. Clubber Lang, Rocky III

5. Khan Noonien Singh, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
This is a rare case of the sequel outshining the original, largely because Ricardo Montalbán knocked it out of the park as the genetically engineered antagonist. 6. Tony Montana, Scarface
It might not feel entirely fair to include the star of his own film, but Al Pacino is simply that good as drug lord Tony Montana in this remake of the 1930s crime classic. Montana is ruthless, violent, and maniacally fantastic as a criminal who genuinely believes he's above the law, and both the character and the film still carry enormous cultural weight decades later.
7. Freddy Krueger, A Nightmare on Elm Street
Perhaps the most recognizable horror figure of the entire decade, Freddy Krueger made a career out of turning dreams into nightmares across five films in the franchise released during the 1980s. Actor Robert Englund's boiler room dwelling, razor gloved terror in the 1984 original remains the best and by far the most frightening entry in the series.
8. John Kreese, The Karate Kid
When people think of 80s film villains, Sensei John Kreese, played by Martin Kove, comes to mind almost instantly. He wasn't interested in teaching the art of karate at his Cobra Kai dojo so much as using it to inflict pain, embodying the "show no mercy, sweep the leg" ethos that made him no match for Mr. Miyagi in the end.
9. Johnny Lawrence, The Karate Kid
William Zabka actually played two memorable teenage villains during the decade, delivering a solid turn as arrogant Chas Osborne in Back to School, but he'll forever be known as the cocky, talented nemesis of Daniel LaRusso in The Karate Kid. Zabka has since kept the character going for a new generation through the Cobra Kai series.
10. Stan Gable, Revenge of the Nerds
All American quarterback Stan Gable, played by Ted McGinley, was smarmy and conceited enough to give a bad name to every jock and face man who graced a college campus in the 1980s. The Tri-Lambs eventually got their revenge on Gable and his crew, and McGinley later reprised the role for the largely forgotten television sequel Revenge of the Nerds III.
11. Terminator, The Terminator
The Terminator is one of the coolest villains of all time and perhaps the deadliest movie bad guy ever put on screen. Arnold Schwarzenegger's iconic cyborg is known for classic lines like "I'll be back," and while the franchise later turned him into a hero, his role in the film that started it all remains genuinely menacing.
12. Biff Tannen, Back to the Future
The classic film bully of any decade, Biff, played by Thomas F. Wilson, is as much a part of the Back to the Future legacy as the DeLorean itself. He serves as the constant tormentor of George McFly and Marty across the franchise, with Wilson also playing several other equally annoying members of the Tannen family throughout the sequels.
13. Mr. Richard Vernon, The Breakfast Club
Every school seems to have that one administrator who abuses his authority and thinks his job is far more important than it actually is, and Mr. Vernon, played by Paul Gleason, embodies that type perfectly. The assistant principal at Shermer High threatens the students with cracking skulls while making a modest $31,000 a year, a detail the film doesn't let him forget.
14. Ivan Drago, Rocky IV
Drago is about the closest thing to a human killing machine in film history, and he never even needed a weapon to earn that reputation. The Russian heavyweight, played by Dolph Lundgren, ended Apollo Creed's life without remorse and set his sights on Rocky Balboa next, in a rivalry Rocky famously turned into a symbolic end to the Cold War.
15. Mr. Ed Rooney, Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Another authority figure who loves to flaunt his power, Ed Rooney, played by Jeffrey Jones, is a plain doofus who's genuinely hilarious to watch throughout the film. His many failed attempts to catch Ferris in the act make for some of the movie's funniest moments, and it's hard not to feel at least a little sorry for his hopeless incompetence by the end.
16. Steff McKee, Pretty in Pink
Teen villains don't come much sleazier than rich boy Steff, and James Spader is simply one of the best at playing this kind of antagonist. Andie, played by Molly Ringwald, is well aware of exactly how rude and demeaning he can be, and by the end of the film even Steff himself seems to recognize it.
17. Ace Merrill, Stand By Me
There's not a single scene in Rob Reiner's beloved film where Ace, played by a young Kiefer Sutherland, isn't behaving like a genuinely awful human being. He might just be the most hated character on this entire list, a small town bully whose menace feels uncomfortably real compared to the more cartoonish villains of the decade.
18. Lieutenant Tom "Iceman" Kazansky, Top Gun
Here's a character we truly love to hate, unless the conversation happens to turn to the film's famous volleyball scene. The conceited, self-serving, and plain annoying Iceman might be Val Kilmer's most memorable role, and while he and Maverick share some genuine moments together, he's still pretty much a jerk for most of the runtime.
19. Alex Forrest, Fatal Attraction
This list isn't limited to men, and there aren't many characters scarier than stalker Alex Forrest, played by Glenn Close, who becomes obsessed with Michael Douglas's married character in this massively popular psychological thriller. Forrest will do anything to keep the affair going, and even the family pets aren't safe from her escalating behavior.
20. Hardy Jenns, Some Kind of Wonderful
Jenns might not be the first name that comes to mind in this category, but as a viewer of this fantastic teen romantic drama, it would have been satisfying to see what happened to Hardy, played by Craig Sheffer, once Duncan and company crashed the party. There's genuinely nothing to like about the womanizing, self righteous, pompous character.
21. Gordon Gekko, Wall Street
Gordon Gekko is the man who told us that greed is good, and Michael Douglas won an Oscar for bringing this Wall Street raider to life. He's easy to hate, but there's an undeniable hint of respect owed to him, since he doesn't care who he steps over or how he gets his information to make a buck, all delivered with a confidence that's genuinely hard to look away from.
22. Chong Li, Bloodsport
While Bloodsport served as Jean-Claude Van Damme's breakout film, bad guy Chong Li, played by Bolo Yeung, deserves plenty of credit for making an impression of his own. He's less genetically enhanced than someone like Ivan Drago, but his win at all costs mentality plays out in one of the best final fights of any martial arts movie from any decade.
23. Hans Gruber, Die Hard
Hans Gruber sits right up there with Darth Vader as one of the greatest movie villains of all time. He doesn't have that physically menacing quality, but he's a diabolical evil genius who gets the blood boiling in nearly every scene, brought to life by the late, legendary Alan Rickman in a genuinely iconic performance.
24. Heather Chandler, Heathers
The leader of the Heather and Veronica Sawyer clique, Heather Chandler, superbly played by the late Kim Walker, is a true mean girl in every sense of the word. She ruled Westerberg High until her sudden downfall, never hesitating to step over anyone on her way to the top of the popularity poll, delivering some of the cult classic's most quotable lines along the way.
25. Brad Wesley, Road House
For years, the ruthless Wesley, played by Ben Gazzara, extorted money from and made life miserable for the business owners of Jasper, Missouri. He ruled the small town by getting whatever he wanted, sending his group of henchmen to handle any dirty work, until Patrick Swayze's Dalton finally arrived to put a stop to it.
26. Long Duk Dong, Sixteen Candles
Long Duk Dong, played by Gedde Watanabe, has become a widely criticized example of a broad ethnic stereotype played entirely for laughs rather than character depth, right down to a sound cue that accompanied his entrances. Even Molly Ringwald, the film's star, has since reflected that the character reads as a grotesque caricature by today's standards.
27. Daniel LaRusso, The Karate Kid
It's become something of a running joke among fans that Daniel LaRusso isn't actually the hero this story makes him out to be, given how the film frames his rivalry with Johnny Lawrence. LaRusso repeatedly settles disputes with aggression rather than ever trying to understand Johnny's side of things, and he ultimately wins the tournament with an illegal kick to the face, a detail that's fueled decades of good natured debate over who the real karate kid should have been.
